Kyoto Arc
The wandering swordsman returns to the capital to face the fire that threatens to consume Meiji Japan.
The Kyoto Arc is a retelling of the manga's Kyoto arc, focusing on the young Oniwabanshū member Makimachi Misao, who encounters the wanderer Himura Kenshin on his quest to defeat Shishio Makoto. The story begins on May 14, 1878, with the assassination of Ōkubo Toshimichi, revealing Shishio's scheme to destroy Kyoto. Okina, leader of the Kyoto Oniwabanshū, entrusts Misao with locating Kenshin, a former assassin known as Hitokiri Battōsai. Misao travels the Tōkaidō road, hoping to find Kenshin and information about her beloved Shinomori Aoshi, while Kenshin is already en route to Kyoto to confront Shishio.

Lore & Background
The arc is defined by Kenshin's confrontation with Shishio Makoto, who proclaims that the corrupt Meiji government must be overthrown and a new world forged through strength. Kenshin rejects this ideology, leading to a battle where his reverse-blade sword, the sakabatō—symbol of his vow never to kill again—is shattered by Shishio Makoto himself. After acquiring a new sword, Kenshin, joined by Saitō Hajime and aided by allies, foils Shishio's scheme to ignite Kyoto. They pursue Shishio to the coast of Yokohama, where the decisive battle unfolds first aboard the ironclad warship Rengoku and then on a beach near the coast. The confrontation climaxes when Shishio pierces Kenshin's shoulder with a final attack, only for Kenshin to counter by smashing the hilt of his sword into Shishio's forehead. Shishio dies moments later as his own body combusts due to his overheating condition.
Reader's Guide
The arc begins with Misao traveling the Tōkaidō road to find Kenshin, who is already heading to Kyoto. Early conflicts introduce Shishio's forces, including Seta Sōjirō, who shatters Kenshin's sakabatō. Kenshin acquires a new sword and, with Saitō Hajime and allies, foils Shishio's plan to ignite Kyoto. The narrative builds toward the battle at Osaka Port aboard the ironclad warship Rengoku. The climax sees Kenshin and Shishio duel, with Shishio dying after Kenshin smashes his sword's hilt into Shishio's forehead, splitting his skull, moments before an explosion consumes the vessel. The resolution sees Kenshin defeat Aoshi and convince him to reunite with Misao, then depart with Aoshi to rejoin Misao and friends.
