History

The first Test at this venue was played on 10 November 1948 between India and the West Indies. In 1952, Hemu Adhikari and Ghulam Ahmed set a record tenth-wicket stand of 111 runs against Pakistan, a record that still stands. S. Venkataraghavan took 8 for 72 and 4 for 80 in his debut series against New Zealand in 1965. During the 1969–70 season, Bishen Singh Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna combined for 18 wickets to secure a seven-wicket win over Australia.

In 1981, Geoff Boycott surpassed Gary Sobers' world record Test aggregate at this ground. Sunil Gavaskar hit his 29th Test century here in 1983 to equal Don Bradman's record of 29 centuries. Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999, becoming the second bowler after Jim Laker to achieve the feat. Sachin Tendulkar scored his 35th Test century against Sri Lanka in December 2005 to break Gavaskar's record for most Test centuries.

An ODI between India and Sri Lanka on 27 December 2009 was called off due to unfit pitch conditions, leading to a 12-month ICC ban on the ground; international cricket returned with the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Since 2008, the stadium has been home to the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. During the third Test of Sri Lanka's 2017–18 tour, smog forced a halt in play, with Sri Lankan players wearing anti-pollution masks and some experiencing breathing issues; Indian coach Ravi Shastri consulted the umpires, and BCCI president C. K. Khanna accused the Sri Lankan team of making a fuss.

Various format records

The highest Test score at this ground is 644–8 by the West Indies in 1959, followed by their 631 all out in 1948 and India's 613–7 in 2008. Dilip Vengsarkar has the most Test runs here with 673, ahead of Sunil Gavaskar (668) and Sachin Tendulkar (643). Anil Kumble leads Test wickets with 58, followed by R. Ashwin (33) and Kapil Dev (32). Only twice has a team scored 300 or more runs in an innings.

The highest ODI total is 428/5 by South Africa against Sri Lanka at the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Fifteen batsmen have scored ODI centuries at this ground, including Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. Viv Richards took 6 wickets for the West Indies against India in 1989. It was selected for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, hosting three Group A matches and one semi-final; the first T20I at the ground was between England and Afghanistan.

On 1 November 2017, India played New Zealand in the first Indian T20I at this ground, which was also Ashish Nehra's final international match; the DDCA renamed one end the Ashish Nehra End for one day. The 1,000th men's T20I was played here on 3 November 2019 during Bangladesh's tour, with Bangladesh recording their first-ever T20I victory over India.
