Plot

After the events of Untamed, Zoey and her friends help Stevie Rae heal from an arrow wound that took most of her lifeblood, allowing Kalona to be freed. Zoey and Stevie Rae reconcile, and Stevie Rae introduces the group to some red vampyre fledglings. Aphrodite lets Stevie Rae feed on her to heal, forming an Imprint between them. Erik follows Zoey to her room and they kiss, but he becomes too rough and scares her; they later get back together, though Zoey is uncertain about his possessiveness. Kalona begins entering Zoey's dreams to seduce her, calling her A-ya. Kramisha, a red fledgling, reveals prophecies through her poetry, and Zoey names her Poet Laureate. One poem states that Kalona and Neferet will be banished when Night, Humanity, Blood, Spirit, and Earth come together. Heath arrives at the tunnels, and a Raven Mocker attacks them, critically wounding Zoey. She drinks from Heath to heal and they Imprint again. Darius declares Zoey needs exposure to adult vampyres to survive, so she returns to the House of Night. There she finds that Kalona's presence has turned fledglings and vampyres against Nyx. Kalona's son Rephaim fights Darius, and Kalona scars Darius. Zoey persuades Stark to turn to the good side; he becomes the second red vampyre by pledging his Warrior's Oath to her. Analyzing Kramisha's poem, Zoey identifies herself as Night, Stevie Rae as Blood, Aphrodite as Humanity, Sister Mary Angela as Spirit, and Grandma Redbird as Earth.

Characters

Zoey Redbird is the main protagonist, a High Priestess with an affinity for all five elements—air, fire, water, earth, and spirit—the only one ever given such power by the goddess Nyx, and the youngest High Priestess in vampyre history. Nyx is the goddess of the vampyres; Kalona was once her warrior, whom she loved and later banished. Erik Night, a former fledgling and Zoey's ex-boyfriend, becomes the vampyre Tracker for Tulsa's House of Night; he has a talent for acting and later sees Shaunee. Stevie Rae Johnson is Zoey's best friend, the first red vampyre High Priestess, with an affinity for earth, and later Rephaim's girlfriend. Neferet, the main antagonist, is a former High Priestess now immortal consort of Darkness and witch queen of the Tsi Sgili. Heath Luck is Zoey's human 'almost-boyfriend'; their Imprint breaks twice, and he is later killed by Kalona, with part of his soul returning in Aurox. Aphrodite LaFont, initially an enemy, becomes an oracle and prophetess after losing her mark. Kalona is a fallen immortal Guardian of Nyx, father of Rephaim and the Raven Mockers, cast from the Otherworld by Nyx. Sylvia Redbird, Zoey's Cherokee Wise Woman grandmother, owns a lavender farm and offers advice. Darius is a son of Erebus. James Stark is a red vampyre who becomes Zoey's Warrior and Guardian, with an affinity for archery.
