RollerCoaster Tycoon World

Fourth major RollerCoaster Tycoon title, released to largely negative reviews.

RollerCoaster Tycoon World is a theme park construction and management simulation game for Microsoft Windows. It was developed by Nvizzio Creations and published by Atari. As the fourth major game in the RollerCoaster Tycoon series, it launched on 16 November 2016 and received largely negative reviews.

Players can build rides, shops, and roller coasters while managing budget, visitor happiness, and technology research. Unlike RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, there are no micro-transactions. The game uses 3D graphics, similar to RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, rather than the 2D isometric style of the first two games. Coaster construction uses a spline system instead of placing individual pieces. Players can ride coasters and other attractions in first or third person. A "Park Pulse" feature, similar to Zoo Tycoon titles, lets players quickly check park status and visitor opinions. At launch, the game included several scenery and ride themes, with more planned for free updates and paid expansions. An "Architect mode" allows players to plan a coaster's layout before building. Four coaster types are available: steel, inverted, wooden, and launch-track, with ten coasters per type. Coasters can be built freeform or placed as pre-made designs. Unlike previous games, trains can derail if built incorrectly, so a safety rating and medical staff were added. User-generated content, including custom scenery, was available from release, along with Steam Workshop support. Terrain and environments are randomly generated, but a terrain editor is also accessible.

Development began after Atari announced RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile and promised a Windows title. The game was officially announced in August 2014 at Gamescom 2014, with Pipeworks Software as developer and a planned early 2015 release. Multiplayer features were planned, including cooperative park-building, visiting others' parks, and global competition between park companies. User-generated assets were also planned. First screenshots and details appeared at PAX Prime 2014. Mid-development, Area 52 Games replaced Pipeworks Software as developer, a change Atari did not explain. A closed alpha was in development. A gameplay trailer on 5 March 2015, featuring POV footage of Goliath and Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain, was criticized for poor graphics.

Lore & Background

RollerCoaster Tycoon World was announced in August 2014 during Gamescom 2014 with Pipeworks Software as its developer and a planned early 2015 release. Part way through development, Area 52 Games replaced Pipeworks, and later Nvizzio Creations took over. The game underwent multiple delays, including a shift from a December 2015 release to early 2016 after feedback from a beta weekend. It entered Early Access on 30 March 2016, which was met with negative reviews, before its full release on 16 November 2016.

Gameplay features 3D graphics, a spline-based coaster builder, an "Architect mode" for planning coasters, and a "Park Pulse" mechanic for monitoring visitor thoughts. Unlike RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, it includes no micro-transactions. Coasters can be built freeform or from pre-made designs, and trains may fly off tracks if built incorrectly, prompting a safety-rating system and medical staff. User-generated content and Steam Workshop support were available from release.

A trailer released in March 2015 was criticized for poor graphics, which the developer attributed to a pre-alpha build using placeholder graphics, promising an upgrade to Unity 5.0. The final game was released one day before Planet Coaster, a spiritual successor by Frontier Developments.

Reader's Guide

RollerCoaster Tycoon World is significant as the fourth major entry in a beloved simulation series, but it is remembered primarily for its troubled development and negative reception. The game changed developers three times—from Pipeworks Software to Area 52 Games to Nvizzio Creations—and faced multiple delays, including a shift from a full release to Early Access. Critics and fans heavily criticized its graphics, which some deemed worse than 2004's RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, as well as its performance, animations, and lack of challenge in career mode. The game holds a Metacritic score of 43 out of 100, with TechRaptor rating it 1/10 due to bugs and interface issues. Its legacy is often contrasted with Planet Coaster, released the day after, which was developed by the studio behind RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and received far more positive attention. Despite its flaws, the game introduced some new features to the series, such as a spline-based coaster builder, an Architect mode, and a safety-rating system for coaster crashes. It also supported user-generated content and Steam Workshop from launch. For historical reference, RollerCoaster Tycoon World serves as a cautionary example of how development mismanagement and unmet expectations can undermine a franchise installment.
