RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is a construction and management simulation game from Origin8 Technologies and Atari. It merges the first two RollerCoaster Tycoon games—both originally designed by Chris Sawyer for PC and built on the same engine—into a single title. The package includes the two expansion packs from the original game, Added Attractions (also called Corkscrew Follies) and Loopy Landscapes, while the RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 expansions Wacky Worlds and Time Twister are available as paid DLC. The game launched on Android and iOS in December 2016, followed by Windows and macOS in September 2017. A Nintendo Switch version arrived on December 5, 2024, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ports following on March 27, 2026. Ports for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One came out on May 28 of the same year.
Gameplay mirrors the first two entries in the series. Players view the park from an isometric perspective and are tasked with building or reviving an amusement park by adding rides, attractions, facilities, paths, landscaping, and staff. The game emphasizes designing custom roller coasters and other track-based rides, such as log flumes and go-karts. Financial management is also key: players must ensure guest revenue covers operating costs and new installations.
Development began after Chris Sawyer, who created the original RollerCoaster Tycoon (1999) and its sequel (2002) following his work on Transport Tycoon (1994), allowed Frontier Developments to handle RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 while he worked on the 2004 game Locomotion. In 2010, Sawyer opened 31X Ltd., a holding company for his Transport Tycoon property, and shifted focus to mobile development. He saw demand for the simpler controls and graphics of the original Tycoon games, which suited touch-screen devices. In 2013, he announced a mobile version of Transport Tycoon developed with Origin8, which helped convert the original assembly-heavy code into a more portable form. Origin8 then worked with Sawyer to port RollerCoaster Tycoon to mobile. In March 2016, Sawyer confirmed work on RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic with Origin8, again converting assembly code from RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 into C++, and adding new elements during the process. The game was released for Android and iOS on December 22, 2016.

Lore & Background
Chris Sawyer had developed the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and its sequel RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, released in 1999 and 2002 respectively. These games came out of his work developing a sequel to Transport Tycoon, which he released in 1994. Sawyer allowed Frontier Developments to develop RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 while he worked on Locomotion, a 2004 spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon. Sawyer re-emerged in 2010 with the opening of 31X Ltd., his holding company for his Transport Tycoon intellectual property, and took 31X in a direction towards mobile development. He recognized demand for a game using the simpler controls and graphics of the original Tycoon games, which worked well for mobile and touch-screen devices. In 2013, he announced the mobile version of Transport Tycoon, developed with Origin8. With Origin8's help, Sawyer converted the original Transport Tycoon code from a form relying heavily on assembly code into a more portable form. Origin8 continued to work with Sawyer to help port RollerCoaster Tycoon into a similar mobile format.
Reader's Guide
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic represents a significant effort to bring the classic isometric park management experience to modern touch-screen devices. By combining the first two games and their expansions into a single package, it offers a comprehensive collection of the original content. The development required Sawyer and Origin8 to rework the assembly code from RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 into C++, allowing for portability. The game was released for Android and iOS in December 2016, with later ports to Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and other platforms. Reception was mixed: some praised its faithful port and low price, while others criticized cramped feel, low framerates, lack of touch-screen support on Switch, and the absence of multiplayer features found in the community-driven OpenRCT2 project. The game's legacy includes enabling OpenRCT2 to use Classic as a base install path in a 2022 update.
