The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
An open-world action RPG based on Slavic folklore.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game released in 2015, created and published by CD Projekt. It continues the story from 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and is the third installment in the video game series based on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels. The game is set in an open world viewed from a third-person perspective. Its fictional fantasy world draws heavily on Slavic folklore, with additional influence from Central and Northern European cultures. Players take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter known as a witcher, as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri, who is fleeing from the Wild Hunt. Combat involves using weapons and magic against various dangers, while interacting with non-player characters and completing quests earns experience points and gold to improve Geralt's abilities and buy equipment. The narrative offers three possible endings, shaped by player choices at key moments. Development began in 2011 and took three and a half years, using the REDengine 3. The music was mainly composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz and performed by the Brandenburg State Orchestra.
The game launched for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in May 2015, followed by a Nintendo Switch version in October 2019, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions (called the "Complete Edition") in December 2022. Critics praised its gameplay, story, world design, combat, and visuals, though some noted technical issues. It has won over 200 game of the year awards and is often considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, also received critical acclaim. A "Game of the Year Edition" including the base game, expansions, and all downloadable content came out in August 2016. As of May 2026, the game has sold more than 65 million units, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. A remastered version, offered as a free upgrade for existing owners across platforms, is scheduled for September 29, 2026 on Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. A third expansion, Songs of the Past, is planned for 2027, and a sequel, The Witcher IV, is currently in development.
Gameplay is action role-playing from a third-person perspective. Players control Geralt, who can walk, run, roll, dodge, and for the first time in the series, jump, climb, and swim.

Key locations include the free city of Novigrad, the Redanian city of Oxenfurt, the no man's land of Velen, the city of Vizima, the Skellige islands, and the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen.
