Lore & Background
The player assumes the role of Alexander, the last offspring of the ancient Illiar family, which has ruled the kingdom of Airath for ages. After enemies of the dynasty attacked the castle, they slaughtered the king's entire family and destroyed his settlement. Before they could kill him, a powerful spell threw the king to a land far beyond his country, leaving him without relatives, friends, army, or money. He takes a vow of vengeance, seeking power and followers to return to his usurped lands and reclaim them by force. On his adventure he meets a female warrior named Eneya and a mage called Rafael, and together they raise an army to battle Samael, who wanders in disguised human form under the name Wolfguard.
Reader's Guide
Ascension to the Throne occupies a niche as a turn-based strategy title with RPG elements from the Ukrainian developer DVS, published by 1C Publishing. Its gameplay is divided into two aspects: a free-roaming environment where the player wanders and interacts with NPCs and hostile encounters (denoted by a circle around the enemy party radius), and hex-based traditional turn-based strategy during battles, where the player controls the entire party. The game's plot follows a classic revenge narrative, with the protagonist Alexander gathering allies to reclaim his kingdom. A sequel, Ascension to the Throne: Valkyrie, was released on August 29, 2008, indicating the game established enough of a following to warrant continuation. The title is notable for its blend of exploration and tactical hex combat, and for being part of the output of the Ukrainian game development scene in the mid-2000s.
