Gameplay

In Cogmind, players control a robot that scavenges over a thousand different parts from defeated machines. Progress relies on equipping these components to grow stronger, though they can be lost when the player takes damage. Its interface is notably more accessible than typical roguelikes. The world features a destructible environment, a living ecosystem of robotic foes, and a sophisticated stealth system that reduces the need for direct combat.

Development

Cogmind began as a 2012 entry for the 7-Day Roguelike Challenge, building on Josh Ge's earlier roguelike X@COM. Ge chose to expand the idea after the challenge, and the first public alpha launched on 24 May 2015. He felt that alpha was as polished as many games' release candidates. In early 2016, Destructoid named it one of the year's top indie games to watch. Grid Sage Games put out a public beta on 6 May 2017, and the game hit Steam early access on 16 October 2017. Despite the early access tag, Ge called it a very complete experience and expected to hold it back from full release for only about six months. As of 2026, it is still in early access. Ge has since explained that the core content was essentially finished by 2017; the label remains solely to permit ongoing free additions—new maps, factions, and endings—rather than to indicate an incomplete product.
