Adonis Creed

From juvenile hall to the Liverpool ring: forging a legacy under his father's shadow.

Adonis "Donnie" Creed, born Adonis Johnson, is the protagonist of the Creed film series (2015–2023), a sequel to the Rocky saga. The illegitimate son of former world champion Apollo Creed and a woman named Johnson who died in the 1990s, Donnie spent his early years in foster care and juvenile hall before being adopted by Mary Anne Creed, Apollo's widow. Living a life of luxury with a white-collar job at Smith Boardley Financial Group, he abandoned it to pursue boxing. Traveling from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, he convinced Rocky Balboa to train him, eventually adopting the Creed name to challenge for the light heavyweight title.

Lore & Background

In 1998, Donnie Johnson was in a Los Angeles juvenile detention center when Mary Anne Creed adopted him, revealing he was Apollo's son from an extramarital affair. Seventeen years later in 2015, the wealthy college graduate held a 15–0 record fighting underground bouts in Tijuana before quitting his job at Smith Boardley Financial Group. After an embarrassing sparring loss to Danny "Stuntman" Wheeler and rejection from trainers due to Apollo's death against Ivan Drago, Donnie moved to Philadelphia.

There, he bonded with Rocky Balboa, calling him "Unc," and began training at the Front Street Gym under the nickname "Hollywood." His relationship with Bianca Taylor, a singer-songwriter with progressive hearing loss, grew as he prepared for his first pro match. When Leo Sporino's father revealed Donnie's parentage to the media, manager Tommy Holiday demanded he use the surname Creed to fight "Pretty" Ricky Conlan. Despite Rocky falling ill with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and refusing chemotherapy, Donnie agreed to use the name only if Rocky sought treatment, leading to their reconciliation before the Liverpool match.

Reader's Guide

To follow Adonis Creed's path, begin with his adoption by Mary Anne Creed at age ten after time in Los Angeles juvenile hall. By 2015, he held a 15–0 record fighting in Tijuana while working at Smith Boardley Financial Group. After sparring losses and rejection, he moved to Philadelphia to train with Rocky Balboa at the Front Street Gym. Key moments include his first pro win against Leo Sporino, adopting the Creed name for the Ricky Conlan fight in Liverpool, and winning the WBC title by knocking out Danny Wheeler in round 4 of their rematch.

He trained under Tony "Little Duke" Evers for fights against Viktor Drago, overcoming injuries including broken ribs and a ruptured kidney. His journey emphasizes balancing family (wife Bianca and daughter Amara) with career, training in diverse locations from Philadelphia gyms to the desert. In Creed III, he defeated Conlan again by KO after studying his moves, securing his status as champion before retirement.
