Origins

James Newlon formed Daddy Warbux in Cape Cod in 1967. The original lineup included vocalist Sheba Coates, Newlon, bassist Jerry Stroup, and drummer Tommy Bonarrigo. Coates left in 1972 and was replaced by Bob Leger. As Daddy Warbux, the band toured the United States supporting Humble Pie. Keyboardist and vocalist Wiley Crawford later joined. The group was renamed BUX and signed to Frank Connolly, then Aerosmith's manager.

BUX

BUX consisted of guitarists James Newlon and Punky Meadows, lead singer Ralph Morman, bassist Mickie Jones, and drummer Rocky Isaac. Capitol Records signed the band in April 1973 and rushed them into the studio. The debut album was completed within five months, but Capitol did not release it because the band split due to inner conflicts and could not tour. Meadows and Jones left to form Angel, whose debut appeared the following year. The group later reformed and played nightclub circuits on the east coast. By late 1975, Angel was enjoying national exposure, and Capitol issued the canned album in February 1976 as We Came To Play, hoping to capitalize on Meadows and Jones's success. Sales were slow, blamed on the record company's lack of promotion and failure to release a single. Ralph Morman later sang on Joe Perry's first solo album Let the Music Do the Talking and recorded two albums as lead singer for Savoy Brown, including that band's highest-charting American single, Run to Me, in 1981. Mickie Jones died in San Dimas, California on September 5, 2009, after a long battle with liver cancer. He performed on four Angel albums and toured extensively with the band. Both Jones and Meadows were asked to join the New York Dolls but declined. After leaving Angel, Jones formed the LA band Empire and later worked in film production. Meadows lived in North Carolina as of 2013. Future Foghat guitarist Erik Cartwright joined BUX in early 1974 after Meadows and Jones left; he appears on the album cover but did not perform on the recordings. Jack Douglas produced the BUX album. We Came To Play has become a sought-after item for vinyl collectors and has not been reissued on CD.
