The Animals discography
English rock group with 20 studio albums and 25 singles.
Last updated
The discography of the Animals, an English music group of the 1960s formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, contains 20 studio albums, six compilation albums, five EPs and 25 singles. They are best known for their rendition of the American folk song "The House of the Rising Sun," which became a Number One hit in both the UK and US in 1964. The group balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues–oriented album material.
Compilation albums
The core of this discography is a single set of live recordings from December 1963 at Newcastle’s Club A Go-Go, captured by Giorgio Gomelsky. These tapes contain seven tracks featuring only the Animals and eleven more where the band backs Sonny Boy Williamson II. Over the decades, these performances have been repackaged countless times.
The all-Animals portion typically draws from songs like "Let It Rock," "Gotta Find My Baby," "Bo Diddley," "Almost Grown," "Dimples," "Boom Boom," and "C Jam Blues." Releases drawing on this material include the Canadian Capitol album The Animals (1964), Mickie Most Presents 'British Go Go' (1965), and Wild Animals (1966). Later live albums like In the Beginning (1970), Rock Generation Vol. 2 (1973, Animals only), and Rock Generation Vol. 4 (1973, with Williamson) followed. Night Time Is the Right Time (Springboard, 1970s) also features Williamson.
More recent issues include Live (1991), In the Beginning: Live in 1963 (1993), Almost Grown (2006), The Animals with Sonny Boy Williamson (2006), and Live at the Club A Go-Go (2008). Beyond these live sets, numerous compilations have been released. The Most Of appeared in 1971. Several Best of the Animals collections came out in 1973 (a two-LP set on ABKCO and a separate Springboard edition) and 1975 (a single LP on ABKCO, notable as the first US compilation with the UK version of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place").
Further best-ofs arrived in 1988, 1997, and 2000. The Complete Animals (1990) and The Best of Eric Burdon and the Animals 1966–1968 (1991) are also part of the catalog. Other compilations include Original Hits (1995), The Best of Eric Burdon and the Animals (2001), Interesting Life (2003), Complete French EPs 1964/1967 (2003), Retrospective (2004, a hybrid SACD), and The Hits (2010).
