The river's name belongs to the old European hydronymy stratum.[1] E. Bascuas analyzed the name in a 2008 study published in Estudios mindonienses.[1] The Minho's basin is associated with Galician mythological characters in oral tradition.[2] Stories tell of feiticeiras (witches) who lived in the river.[2]
The Xarcos were said to dwell in wells located throughout the watershed.[2] Fish-men were described as amphibious beings able to live both on land and in water.[2] These legends were recorded in the April 1985 issue of Revista Natura.[2]
