Key facts and history
Summer was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.[2] She is described as conventional, often superficial, and obsessed with improving her social status among peers.[2] Summer occasionally expresses jealousy that Morty gets to accompany Rick on adventures.[1] Following the events of "Rick Potion #9," a new Summer from dimension C-131 is introduced.[3]
The original Summer Prime later dies in the Rick and Morty comic series.[3] Summer served as the protagonist of the 2016 miniseries Lil' Poopy Superstar.[3] Spencer Grammer stated that her performance influenced the writers to give Summer more independent and feminist points of view.[4][5] Grammer also noted that Summer has gotten stronger, more independent, and more sure of herself over time.[4]
What the cited sources add
The A.V. Club described Summer as having a better understanding of how people work than anybody else.[4] Inverse declared Summer "the most relatable character on Rick and Morty"[6] Grammer described Summer as "a millennial depiction of a feminist" who calls Rick out on his bad behavior.[6] VerbStomp characterized Summer as one of those high school girls everyone hated but simultaneously tried to be.[7]
A 2020 CinemaBlend article noted that an alternate-dimension Summer in the comic arc "One Experimental Summer" is a lesbian.[8] The same article implied that the prime Summer may be a closeted lesbian who has never felt the happiness to realize it.[8] Grammer told Looper that she sees "loads" of herself in Summer, though her favorite color is black, not pink.[5]
