Ida B. Wells was an American investigative journalist and early civil rights leader born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1862.[1][2] She documented lynching of African-Americans throughout the 1890s in pamphlets such as Southern Horrors and The Red Record.[1] Wells died on March 25, 1931 in Chicago and received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize special citation in 2020.[3]

Key facts and history

The Tennessee Supreme Court reversed that ruling in 1887 and ordered Wells to pay court costs.[4] Ida Bell Wells came into the world on July 16, 1862, at the Boling Farm, which is situated near Holly Springs, Mississippi.[5] Because Union troops took control of Holly Springs, she was liberated from slavery while still a baby, due to the Emancipation Proclamation.[2] When she was sixteen, the 1878 yellow fever epidemic killed both of her parents and a baby brother.[2]

The local circuit court ruled in her favor on December 24, 1884, awarding her $500.[4]
