Karen's Diner
A theme restaurant where staff insult paying customers.
Karen's Diner was an Australian chain of theme restaurants known for advertising a deliberately unpleasant dining experience. Staff were instructed to insult customers throughout their meal, and the restaurant's name came from the internet slang term 'Karen,' used to describe an older white woman perceived as entitled or excessively demanding. The chain was established in 2021 in Sydney by Aden Levin and James Farrell, originally planned as a six-month pop-up at World Square. It became a popular source of social media content, particularly on TikTok, as customers posted videos of their interactions with staff.

History
Karen's Diner was an Australian chain of theme restaurants that operated on a simple, strange premise: customers paid to be insulted. The name came from the internet slang "Karen," used to describe a demanding or entitled older white woman. The first location opened in Sydney in 2021, founded by Aden Levin and James Farrell. It was originally meant to be a six-month pop-up at World Square. The concept received mixed reactions early on, with some worrying that encouraging mutual rudeness could lead to staff being abused by customers.
Staff were trained to act abrasively and mock diners in a comedic way, while customers were expected to be rude back. Insults based on racism, sexism, or homophobia were banned. Profanity was common, and anyone under 16 had to be accompanied by an adult. If a customer's ID showed their name was Karen, they got a free drink. The restaurant's look was inspired by 1950s American diners, and the menu focused on hamburgers and chicken wings. The concept became a hit on TikTok, where customers posted videos of their interactions with staff.
The chain expanded beyond Australia, opening locations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Indonesia, and New Zealand. A New Zealand branch opened in Mount Eden in August 2022. That same month, controversy erupted when a TikTok video appeared to show a staff member at a Brisbane location making inappropriate comments about an underage patron and accusing her father of being a pedophile. The chain said it launched an investigation and promised stricter training.
In May 2023, Viral Ventures (Australia), the company that owned most of the Australian restaurants, went into liquidation. Viral Ventures NZ followed in July 2023. By 2025, the last remaining UK restaurant had closed.
