Lore & Background
Shinji Mikami grew up in Yamaguchi Prefecture on Honshū island. His father, who dropped out of high school to support his family, beat him almost daily. Despite this, Mikami had a normal childhood without video games, spending time outdoors and developing a passion for horror films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead. He also studied karate and kendo. After failing entrance exams for two years, he graduated from Doshisha University with a major in merchandise study.
Mikami joined Capcom in 1990 after attending a job fair for the free food. His first project was a Game Boy quiz game, followed by Disney-licensed titles including Aladdin, which sold over 1.75 million units. In 1993, he began developing a horror game for the PlayStation originally conceived as a remake of Sweet Home. This became Resident Evil, released in 1996, which coined the term 'survival horror' and became one of the PlayStation's first successful titles. He later directed Dino Crisis (1999), the Resident Evil remake (2002), and Resident Evil 4 (2005).
After leaving Capcom in 2006, Mikami founded PlatinumGames and directed Vanquish (2010). That same year, he left to found Tango Gameworks, where he directed The Evil Within (2014). In 2022, he founded Unbound Co., Ltd., and left Tango Gameworks in 2023.
Reader's Guide
Shinji Mikami's significance lies in his role as the creator of the survival horror genre through the Resident Evil series. The 1996 original defined the genre with its resource management and fixed camera angles, influencing countless subsequent games. His later work on Resident Evil 4 in 2005 reinvented the series with an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter perspective, setting a new standard for action-horror. Mikami's career also includes founding two major studios—PlatinumGames and Tango Gameworks—which produced notable titles like Vanquish and The Evil Within. In 2009, IGN named him one of the top 100 game creators of all time. His legacy is marked by both creative innovation and business decisions, such as the controversial GameCube exclusivity agreement for Resident Evil games. Mikami's influence extends beyond his own titles, as his design philosophies have shaped the broader landscape of video game horror and action.
