Resident Evil: Damnation

Leon S. Kennedy walks into a post-Soviet civil war where bioweapons fight on both sides.

Resident Evil: Damnation is a 2012 Japanese CGI action horror film for adults, directed by Makoto Kamiya with Hiroyuki Kobayashi producing. Matthew Mercer voices Leon S. Kennedy in English, with Dave Wittenberg, Wendee Lee and Courtenay Taylor also in the cast. Leon, now a DSO agent, slips into a former Soviet state to find out whether Bio-Organic Weapons are being used in its civil war. The film was built to stand closer to the games than other spin-offs, with Capcom consulted on how its characters should behave, and it set up story threads that carry into Resident Evil 6.

Background

Talk of a follow-up began at the end of 2008, when Resident Evil: Degeneration came out and did well enough that Capcom and SPEJ agreed to team up again. Work on the sequel formally started in September 2010. Character models drew on Capcom's designs for Resident Evil 6, and the Licker model came straight from Capcom, while the team added original creatures of its own. Writer Shotaro Suga, back from Degeneration, travelled to Eastern Europe and invented the Eastern Slav Republic as the setting. Ada Wong replaced Claire as the returning heroine, and Kobayashi pushed for more horror alongside the action, using Tyrants to shock viewers. The film opened in Shinjuku on October 27, 2012, after a first trailer and opening minutes were shown at San Diego Comic-Con on July 13, 2012.
