The Oriental bluespotted maskray, *Neotrygon orientalis*, is a whiptail stingray found primarily in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan. It is the host for a newly described tapeworm species, *Echinobothrium ivanovae*.

This ray can be told apart from its close relative *Neotrygon kuhlii* by features including sharply angled pectoral fin tips, a dusky tail fold with a darker edge, a small mouth, prominent mask-like markings, and moderate-sized blue spots mixed with dark peppery spots. Males reach a maximum disc width of 38 cm. It is often mistaken for the newly described *Neotrygon yakkoei* and other members of the *kuhlii* complex, whose high physical similarity makes identification difficult. Genetically, *N. orientalis* and *N. varidens* form a sister group to *N. indica*, suggesting a common ancestor in the Plio-Pleistocene.

Its range includes Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi in Indonesia; Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia; Singapore; Brunei; the Philippines; and Taiwan, covering the Western Central and Northwest Pacific. It lives in inshore habitats from the surface down to about 100 meters. In some areas, such as among the Bajau and Laut communities, it is caught and kept as a food item. Its true distribution is unclear due to confusion with other *kuhlii* complex species.

Historically, snout angle was used to separate *N. orientalis* from *N. kuhlii*, but this method has been dropped because it is subjective. More accurate identification has been achieved using spot patterns, tail traits, and sex at three sites in Malaysian waters with baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVS), which also improve population estimates. The species has also been confused with the newly described *N. indica*. It now has a distinct BIN number, a DNA barcode that aids identification when other methods fail.

The average sex ratio is 1.4 males to 1 female. Growth is negatively allometric, meaning length increases faster than weight. Both sexes grow slowly: males take about 60 weeks to reach maximum length, females about 56 weeks. Growth is influenced by temperature and food, but the ray can still grow in poor conditions.

Reproduction is viviparous, with a birth size of about 12 cm disc width. Maximum age is unknown, but based on the similar Coral Sea maskray (*Neotrygon trinoides*), it may be around 12 years.
