Reticulate whipray
A large, spotted stingray with a complex taxonomic history.
The reticulate whipray, also known as the honeycomb stingray, is a large stingray species that lives in coastal waters of the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, off Natal, and in the Arabian Sea. It has also migrated into the eastern Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. This ray can reach 2 meters (6.6 feet) across and has a diamond-shaped pectoral fin disc and a very long, whip-like tail that lacks fin folds. Its common and scientific names come from the ornate pattern on its back: many small, closely spaced dark spots or reticulations against a lighter background. However, it is just one of several large spotted stingrays in the Indo-Pacific, and its coloration varies with age and location, which has caused significant taxonomic confusion.
During the day, this ray is often seen resting on the seafloor. It preys on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and bony fishes. Like other stingrays, it is aplacental viviparous: embryos are first nourished by yolk, then by histotroph, or "uterine milk." Females give birth to litters of up to five pups in summer, after a gestation period of about a year. The reticulate whipray is fished in parts of the Indian Ocean for its meat, skin, cartilage, and other uses. Because of its large size, inshore habitat, and low reproductive rate, it is highly vulnerable to population decline, and it also faces threats from extensive habitat degradation. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed this species as Endangered.

The reticulate whipray was first described from a spotted variant called 'uarnak' by Peter Forsskål in 1775, published posthumously by Carsten Niebuhr. The name uarnak is the Arabic word for stingrays on the Red Sea shores. Later authorities have regarded Forsskål's uarnak as the earliest available name, though no type specimen was originally designated; a neotype from the Jeddah region in the Red Sea was later designated to distinguish it from close relatives. The species is closely related to H. undulata, H. leoparda, H. tutul, and H. australis, all of which are very similar in size and shape, leading to long-standing taxonomic confusion. In 2004, Mabel Manjaji designated the 'uarnak' species complex including several genetically unrelated species. The reticulate whipray itself varies in appearance throughout its range, and further taxonomic comparisons are required to determine whether its spotted and reticulated color morphs represent different species.
