Ningaloo maskray
A small, colorful stingray endemic to northwestern Australia.
The Ningaloo maskray (Neotrygon ningalooensis) is a stingray from the Dasyatidae family that lives off northwestern Australia. Its disc, which is diamond-shaped, reaches a width of 30 cm (12 in). The ray has a blunt snout, rounded outer corners on its pectoral fins, and a whip-like tail that features fin folds on both the upper and lower sides. The upper body is yellowish brown and covered in a pattern of many small, sharply defined deep orange spots and larger, blurry pale blue spots.
This bottom-dwelling ray stays in shallow inshore waters less than 5 m (16 ft) deep, where it shows very specific habitat needs. It prefers fine reddish sand near reefs, and its coloring provides excellent camouflage there. Its eyes are more protruding than those of other maskrays, which lets it bury itself deeper in the sand while still watching for threats. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as Data Deficient because not enough is known about it. It is not at risk from fishing, but habitat degradation could harm it.
The first sighting of the Ningaloo maskray occurred during a study of sharks and rays in Ningaloo Marine Park, funded by the Western Australian Marine Science Institute (WAMSI). Peter Last, William White, and Melody Puckridge described it in a 2010 article in the journal *Aqua*. The type specimens—two adult males, one 30 cm (12 in) and the other 29 cm (11 in) across—came from Five Fingers Reef near Coral Bay, Western Australia.
A 2012 phylogenetic study using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA found that the Ningaloo maskray and the plain maskray (N. annotata) are the most basal members of their genus. The study also revealed deep differences in mitochondrial DNA between the Coral Bay and Shark Bay populations, suggesting they belong to separate lineages. However, rays from the two locations do not differ physically or in known nuclear DNA markers, so it is unclear if they are distinct species. This genetic split likely resulted from sea level changes that divided the population. Estimates for when this happened vary: either around 11 million years ago (Miocene) or 3–2 million years ago (Pliocene).

The eyes are large and protruding, with large crescent-shaped spiracles behind. The whip-like tail bears two very slender stinging spines on the upper surface. The upper surface of the disc is yellowish brown with numerous dark orange and light blue spots; there is a darker mask-like marking across the eyes as in other Neotrygon species, though it may be hard to discern. The tail has alternating black and white bands behind the stings.
