Atlantic stingray
A small, euryhaline stingray of the western Atlantic coast.
The Atlantic stingray (Hypanus sabinus) belongs to the Dasyatidae family and is found along North America’s Atlantic coast, from the Chesapeake Bay down to Mexico, often in brackish or fresh water. Its snout is noticeably longer than those of similar stingrays in the region. Commercially, it has little value, though it is sometimes sold for home aquariums.
French naturalist Charles Alexandre Lesueur first described the species in 1824, naming it *Trygon sabina* based on a damaged male specimen collected by Titian Ramsay Peale during an 1817 expedition to Florida. Over time, it was placed in several now-obsolete genera—*Pastinaca*, *Dasybatus* (and its variants), and *Amphotistius*—before being settled into *Dasyatis*. A 2001 morphological study by Lisa Rosenberger showed that the Atlantic stingray is one of the more primitive members of its genus, serving as an outgroup to a large group that includes the southern stingray, roughtail stingray, longnose stingray, and pearl stingray.
This ray lives in the western Atlantic from Chesapeake Bay south to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, reaching as far as Campeche, Mexico. Reports from Grenada, Suriname, and Brazil are likely misidentifications. It tolerates a wide range of salinities and enters freshwater, with records from the Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain, Winyah Bay, and Florida’s St. Johns River. The St. Johns population is the only permanent freshwater elasmobranch group in North America. Its habitat includes shallow coastal waters with sandy or silty bottoms, estuaries, and lakes, preferring temperatures above 15°C (59°F) and tolerating over 30°C (86°F). It migrates seasonally to stay warm: it appears in Chesapeake Bay only during summer and fall, and elsewhere moves to deeper water in winter. Inshore depths are usually 2–6 m (6.6–19.7 ft), but offshore it can go as deep as 25 m (82 ft).
One of the smallest stingrays, the Atlantic stingray reaches a maximum length of 61 cm (24 in) and weight of 4.9 kg (11 lb). Its pectoral fin disk is spade-shaped, 1.1 times wider than long, with rounded corners and concave front edges. The snout is relatively long. Inside the mouth are three stout papillae on the floor; the teeth are rounded and flat. During mating season, mature males develop long, sharp tooth cusps that curve toward the mouth corners to grip females.

One of the smallest stingray species, it has a spade-shaped pectoral fin disk with a relatively long snout. Its coloration is brown or yellowish brown above, becoming lighter toward the margin, sometimes with a dark stripe along the midline, and white or light gray below. The tail is whip-like with a serrated spine that is replaced annually between June and October. Larger individuals develop tubercles along the midline of the back, and some larger females also develop tubercles around the eyes and spiracles.
The Atlantic stingray is capable of tolerating varying salinities and can enter freshwater; it has been reported from the Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain, Winyah Bay, and the St. Johns River in Florida. The stingrays in the St. Johns River system represent the only permanent freshwater elasmobranch population in North America. Despite this regular freshwater presence, no population has evolved the specialized osmoregulatory mechanisms found in river stingrays, possibly due to the relatively recent date of freshwater colonization (under one million years) and/or incomplete genetic isolation.
