Lore & Background
Rising to power through fear and strength, Cluny established Kotir (the old fortress) as a bastion for outcasts and predators. Unlike typical scavenging vermin, he organized his followers into a disciplined fighting force capable of siege warfare. His hatred for Redwall Abbey was personal and ideological; he viewed the peaceful sanctuary as an insult to the natural order of predation. During his reign, Cluny gathered allies from across Mossflower, including rats, weasels, stoats, ferrets, and foxes, but not wolves.
He sought to burn the Abbey to the ground, believing that only through total destruction could his rule be absolute. His presence cast a long shadow over the region, forcing many small animals into hiding or exile before the final confrontation. His downfall came not from lack of power, but from underestimating the courage of those he opposed. Despite his armor and weaponry, Cluny was killed when Matthias rang the great bell, causing it to fall and crush him. His death signaled the collapse of the Kotir horde and restored peace to the valley.
Reader's Guide
Cluny the Scourge serves as the primary antagonist in the novel Mattimeo, representing a threat of overwhelming force and tyranny. He is a rat of exceptional size and strength, leading a massive horde of vermin from his stronghold at Castle Crag. His motivation stems from a desire to conquer Mossflower Country and destroy Redwall Abbey, viewing it as a beacon of weakness that must be extinguished. His skills lie in military command and brutal combat.
He wears heavy armor and wields a sword, distinguishing him from typical vermin scavengers. Cluny commands fear through intimidation and sheer physical dominance, rallying lesser creatures to his cause with promises of plunder. However, his arrogance becomes his undoing during the final siege. His defining moment occurs in the climactic battle at Redwall.
Despite his power, he falls to Mattimeo, Martin the Warrior's son. This victory secures peace for the Abbey and cements Cluny as a cautionary tale of unchecked ambition. His death marks the end of the Castle Crag threat, allowing the animals of Mossflower to rebuild their lives in safety.
