Summary
A red fox sea captain named Vizka Longtooth leads his crew, the Sea Raiders, in a raid on a remote farmhouse in the cold Northern Isles. The home belongs to a young badger named Gorath and his grandparents. Vizka knocks Gorath unconscious with his chain and mace, then has him taken aboard the ship the Bludgullet. Vizka's brother, Codj, locks the two elder badgers inside the farmhouse and sets it ablaze. Meanwhile, at the mountain fortress of Salamandastron, the ruling badger Lord Asheye has a vision that an unknown badger—later revealed to be Gorath—will take his place come autumn. He dispatches a young hare named Maudie to find this badger. During her journey, Maudie gets trapped by sand lizards. Around the same time, a young hedgehog named Orkwil Prink is thrown out of Redwall Abbey for stealing.
Gorath, now a prisoner, vows to kill Codj for murdering his grandparents. When he kills a weasel that taunts him, the crew realizes he is a dangerous creature. Vizka, seeing an opportunity, tries to recruit Gorath. Maudie is rescued from the sand lizards by a long-eared owl named Asio Bardwing, who agrees to guide her to the Guosim shrews, who can take her to Redwall as Lord Asheye instructed. They find the shrews, but Asio dies saving a baby shrew from an adder. Vizka eventually sees that Gorath will never join him and decides to starve him. Before Gorath dies, Codj captures Orkwil. Orkwil, a skilled thief, frees himself and Gorath. During their escape, Gorath kills Codj, avenging his grandparents.
Maudie and the Guosim are followed by another vermin band, the Brownrats, led by the obese Gruntan Kurdly, who wants the shrews' logboats. They encounter Barbowla the otter and his group, along with a squirrel named Rangval the Rogue. The Brownrats kidnap a baby shrew. Maudie and the Log-a-Log, the shrew leader, rescue the baby, but the Log-a-Log is killed. Gorath and Orkwil reach Redwall and warn Abbot Daucus and Skipper Rorc about the approaching Sea Raiders. They are joined by Rangval, Barbowla and his otters, and the Guosim. Maudie arrives later with the rescued baby shrew and news of the Log-a-Log's death. The Log-a-Log's son becomes the new leader and vows revenge on the Brownrats.
