Basque derby
Local derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao.
The Basque derby (Euskal Derbia in Basque, derbi Vasco in Spanish) is the local football rivalry between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao. It represents the inter-city competition between Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastián, the capitals of the neighboring provinces of Biscay and Gipuzkoa within Spain’s Basque Country. Sometimes it is called the AP-8 derby, after the highway linking the two cities.
The first derby took place in April 1909, and it has been a focus for local football fans ever since. These two clubs are the largest in the Basque Country and have spent more time in Spain’s top division than most, winning several trophies over the past century. Both had a highly successful period in the early 1980s, winning four national titles in a row between them while fielding only local players. Other Basque clubs—notably CA Osunasa, Deportivo Alavés, and SD Eibar—have also played in the top division (and occasionally faced Real Sociedad in the second tier or in cup matches); games involving any of these sides are also called a “Basque derby.”
Unusually for a local derby, supporters of both teams traditionally mix around the stadiums on matchdays and take part in organized events such as a *kalijera* (a fan parade from the city center to the ground) and the *Bertso-derbia*, a singing and poetry contest in the style of traditional Bertsolaritza. The fans are often praised for the relaxed atmosphere at derby matches, and while incidents have occurred inside the stadiums, hostility is usually aimed at rival players rather than fellow supporters.
Real Sociedad has spent 16 seasons in the second division (the longest stretch being five years), so the derby has not always been played every season. Athletic Bilbao has never been relegated, meaning all its league matches have been in the top tier. In the 21st century, the only enforced break in the fixture was a three-year (1,400-day) gap between January 2007 and December 2010.
The first meeting between Athletic Bilbao and a team that later became Real Sociedad was scheduled for the 1905 Copa del Rey, a mini-league with just three teams: Athletic, hosts Madrid F.C., and San Sebastián Recreation Club. After Madrid beat both Basque sides, Athletic refused to play the dead rubber between them.

The derby was first played in April 1909. Early meetings were complicated by disputes over eligibility and competition formats; in 1911 Real Sociedad withdrew from the Copa del Rey after accusations that Athletic Bilbao used ineligible foreign players were rejected. Regional leagues separated the clubs into the Biscay and Gipuzkoa championships for sixteen years. The first league meeting occurred in February 1929. In 1976, captains Inaxio Kortabarria and José Ángel Iribar displayed the banned Ikurriña after Franco's death; Real Sociedad won 5–0, their biggest derby victory at that time. Both clubs have employed a cantera system for developing local players, though Real Sociedad later signed foreign and non-Basque Spanish players.
