Pac-Man Maze

A neon-lit labyrinth honoring the arcade legend within the digital metaverse.

The Pac-Man Maze is a legendary digital recreation located within the vast expanse of the OASIS, modeled after the iconic arcade game from the early 1980s. As one of the many classic game worlds preserved by James Halliday, it serves as both an entertainment hub and a nostalgic pilgrimage site for gamers worldwide. The maze faithfully reproduces the original 1980 Namco arcade game, where players control Pac-Man through an enclosed maze eating dots while avoiding four colored ghosts—Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan), and Clyde (orange). Power pellets temporarily turn ghosts blue and vulnerable, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for bonus points.

Lore & Background

The Pac-Man Maze is a direct recreation of the game designed by Toru Iwatani, who led a nine-man team beginning development in early 1979. Iwatani wanted to create a game that could appeal to women as well as men, because most video games of the time had themes that appealed to traditionally masculine interests, such as war or sports. The character of Pac-Man was inspired by the image of a pizza with a slice removed, though Iwatani also said he rounded out the Japanese character for mouth, kuchi (Japanese: 口). The original Japanese title Puck Man was derived from the Japanese phrase paku paku taberu, referring to gobbling something up; it was changed to Pac-Man for North America due to fears of vandals defacing cabinets by converting the P into an F. The four ghosts each have unique AI personalities: Blinky gives direct chase; Pinky and Inky try to position themselves in front of Pac-Man; and Clyde switches between chasing and fleeing. The game increases in difficulty as the player progresses, with ghosts becoming faster and energizer effects decreasing until an integer overflow causes the 256th level to load improperly—a kill screen.

Reader's Guide

Accessing the Pac-Man Maze requires navigating through the OASIS's arcade sector, which is often crowded during peak hours. Players should be aware that while combat is disabled in this zone, navigation hazards remain active. The maze layout mirrors the original arcade design, featuring four distinct ghost personas that patrol specific routes. Collecting power pellets temporarily reverses their behavior, allowing for safe traversal of dangerous sections. Each ghost has its own AI: Blinky gives direct chase; Pinky and Inky try to corner Pac-Man; Clyde alternates between chasing and fleeing based on distance. Eating multiple blue ghosts in succession increases their point value. After a certain time, blue ghosts flash white before returning to normal. Ghosts become slower when entering and exiting the warp tunnels. Visitors often use this location to test reaction times or socialize with other hunters. It is recommended to bring a backup avatar in case of lag spikes during high-traffic events. Remember, while no keys are hidden here, the nostalgia factor makes it essential viewing.
