F.M. Einheit

German percussionist known for industrial music and custom instruments.

Last updated

Frank-Martin Strauß, better known as F.M. Einheit and also as Mufti, was born on 18 December 1958 in Dortmund, Germany. He is a musician and actor recognized for his work in industrial and electronic music.

He is primarily known as a percussionist for the influential group Einstürzende Neubauten, where he played self-designed custom instruments. Einheit has also collaborated with KMFDM and Goethes Erben, and has recorded several albums with other musicians as well as solo work. He was involved in the projects Stein and Gry.

Early years

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Strauß was a member of the punk bands Abwärts from Hamburg and Palais Schaumburg. He joined Einstürzende Neubauten in the early 1980s as a percussionist, playing custom-made metal instruments and tools such as a hammer drill, and was instrumental to the group's sound development. Live performances included metal banging, stage destruction, and fire, becoming legendary and influencing the band's image. He played the lead role in the 1984 feature film Klaus Maeck's Decoder, a cyberpunk critique of muzak, and was part of Alfred 23 Harth's group Vladimir Estragon in 1988–9.

1990s–2000s

After leaving Einstürzende Neubauten in the mid-1990s, citing a loss of creative interest during the making of Ende Neu, Einheit joined the band Stein alongside Ulrike Haage and Rainbirds’ Katharina Franck. His next major venture was the group Gry, fronted by Danish singer Gry Bagøien, which produced two albums: The Touch Of E! (1998) and Public Recording (2000), the latter featuring Pan Sonic and Neubauten’s Alexander Hacke. He has also worked in theater and radio plays, and occasionally reunited on stage with Hacke for experimental performances.
