Volkswagen Polo Mk6
First Polo on MQB platform, with increased rigidity and digital cockpit.
The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo, a supermini, has been in production since 2017. It debuted in Berlin on 16 June 2017 and went on sale later that year. Built on the Volkswagen Group MQB A0 platform, it marks the first Polo without a three-door option and the first Volkswagen passenger car to use a shortened version of this platform.
Compared to its predecessor, the Mk6 Polo is 81 mm longer, 63 mm wider, and 7 mm lower, with a wheelbase extended by 92 mm to 2564 mm. The new platform increased structural stiffness from 14,000 Nm per degree to over 18,000 Nm per degree. Boot space grew by roughly 25 percent, from 280 to 351 litres. An optional 11.7-inch second-generation Active Info Digital Display Cockpit is a class first. Standard safety features include front collision detection, blind-spot assist, and emergency stopping. The car offers 14 exterior colours and 17 dashboard colour options.
All right-hand-drive models are built at Volkswagen’s plant in Uitenhage/Kariega, South Africa, which also exclusively produces the Polo GTI.
In Europe, initial trim levels were Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, a ‘Beats’ edition, and the GTI. UK trims included SE, SEL, R-Line, GTI, and GTI+. European engines comprised 1.0-litre three-cylinder units: naturally aspirated versions with 65 PS and 75 PS, a natural-gas 1.0-litre TGI with 89 PS, and a 95 PS TSI. A 1.6-litre TDI diesel offered 80 PS or 95 PS. The GTI used a 200 PS 2.0-litre TSI.
In Latin America, the Polo launched in Brazil in September 2017, slotting between the Fox and Golf. It reintroduced the nameplate after the fourth-generation Polo ended there in 2015. Changes from the European version included a reworked suspension for higher ground clearance, different headlights, and a revised front bumper. Engine choices were a 1.0-litre MPI petrol (85 PS), a 1.6-litre MSI (119 PS), and a 1.0-litre TSI (130 PS, marketed as ‘200 TSI’). The GTS variant, with a 150 PS 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and cosmetic upgrades, arrived in Brazil in early 2020. In Mexico, a facelifted Brazilian-imported Polo replaced the Indian-made Mk5 in 2023, sharing engines with the Virtus saloon.
The Polo Track, a low-cost version for fleet buyers, was announced in November 2022 and released in February 2023.

Lore & Background
The Mk6 Polo is 81 mm longer, 63 mm wider and 7 mm lower than its predecessor, with a wheelbase of 2564 mm (92 mm longer). The adoption of the MQB platform brought an increase in rigidity from 14,000 Nm per degree to more than 18,000 Nm per degree. Boot space increased by about 25 percent, from 280 to 351 L. Optionally, it features the second-generation 11.7-inch Active Info Digital Display Cockpit, a first in its class. Standard equipment includes front collision detection, blind-spot assist, and emergency stopping. The car is said to be extremely customizable, available in 14 exterior colours and 17 dashboard colours.
Production for all right-hand drive markets is allocated to the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage/Kariega, South Africa, which is also the sole producer of the Polo GTI. In Europe, three trim levels were announced in 2017: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline, plus the 'Beats' special edition and the performance-oriented Polo GTI. UK trim levels in 2017 were SE, SEL, R-Line, GTI and GTI+. European models initially offered a range of 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines (65 PS, 75 PS naturally aspirated; 89 PS TGI natural gas; 95 PS TSI), a 1.6-litre TDI (80 PS and 95 PS), and a 200 PS 2.0-litre TSI for the GTI.
The Latin American-spec Polo debuted in Brazil in September 2017, positioned between the Fox and Golf. It received a reworked suspension for higher ground clearance, different headlight assembly, and revised front bumper. Engine options included a 1.0-litre MPI (85 PS), 1.6-litre MSI (119 PS), and 1.0-litre TSI (130 PS, marketed as '200 TSI'). In early 2020, the GTS variant launched in Brazil with a 150 PS 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. In Mexico, the Brazilian-imported facelifted Polo was released in 2023. A low-cost Polo Track was announced in November 2022 and released in February 2023, powered by a 1.0-litre MPI flex engine producing 85 PS.
Reader's Guide
The Volkswagen Polo Mk6 marks a significant generational shift by adopting the MQB A0 platform, which brought substantial gains in body stiffness, cabin space, and interior technology. Its increased rigidity—from 14,000 to over 18,000 Nm per degree—improved structural integrity, while the longer wheelbase and larger boot addressed practical concerns. The introduction of a fully digital instrument cluster as an option set a new benchmark in the supermini class.
Regionally, the Mk6 was adapted for different markets: European models emphasized efficiency and performance with a range of three-cylinder and diesel engines, while Latin American versions received suspension and styling changes for local conditions. The Polo GTI continued the hot-hatch lineage with a 200 PS 2.0-litre TSI engine. The South African plant became the sole producer of the GTI and all right-hand-drive models.
The facelift in April 2021 (colloquially known as the MK7) introduced a redesigned front end with an LED light bar, matrix LED headlights as an option, wider LED taillights extending onto the tailgate, and a fully digital instrument cluster as standard. The Polo Track, launched in 2023, served as a low-cost replacement for the Gol, targeting fleet buyers. The Mk6's legacy lies in its platform-driven evolution, regional versatility, and continued relevance in the supermini segment.
