The Hive (video game)
A rail shooter about infiltrating a hive of mutant insects.
Last updated
The Hive is a rail shooter developed by Rainbow Studios and published by Trimark Interactive for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation. It was among the first Windows 95 games released for that platform.
Story
Millennia ago, the Ancients engineered a mutant strain of Hivasects to produce a deadly bio-toxin. An accident caused the toxin to erase the Ancients from existence. After the discovery of their civilization, the Federation quarantined the solar system. The Black Nexus Mob, posing as Noir Dyne Corporation under Chairman Helms, revived the Hivasects from an archived DNA sample of a Queen, creating an operational Hive capable of threatening the galaxy.
Max, a Federation Agent, is ordered by Commodore Adrian to infiltrate Noir Dyne as a cargo runner. He joins the Noir Dyne vessel STX Darkstar near the Ice Planet to retrieve a bio-toxin sample, but his cover is blown and the shipment is a bomb. Warned by liaison Agent Ginger Malloy, Max aborts the mission and fights through enemies to destroy the Hive.
Reception
A Next Generation reviewer described the graphics as stunning but criticized the plot as resembling a second-rate sci-fi novel and the rail shooter gameplay as repetitive and minimally interactive, giving it two out of five stars. Scary Larry of GamePro panned the PlayStation version, citing a slow aiming cursor, poorly compressed graphics, dull gameplay, and an annoying onboard computer voice, questioning why the version was released. The game shipped more than 120,000 copies.
