Lucky

Born from a five-hour charity session to become the first mark on the wall for OK Computer.

"Lucky" is a song by the English rock band Radiohead, first released on The Help Album in 1995. This charity compilation was organized by War Child and required artists to record in a single day. Guitarist Ed O'Brien originated the track's core sound during Japan tour soundchecks while promoting their second album, The Bends, by strumming above the guitar nut to create a high-pitched tone. The band developed this into a full song which became a staple of their set list. Recorded in just five hours with engineer Nigel Godrich on 4 September 1995, the track was later included as the 11th song on Radiohead's third studio album, OK Computer (1997). It served as a physical single exclusively in France on 26 December 1997.

Lore & Background

The creation of "Lucky" began during the 1995 tour for The Bends. While performing soundchecks in Japan, guitarist Ed O'Brien experimented by strumming above the guitar nut, producing a distinctive high-pitched sound that the band immediately developed into a complete song. Around this time, producer Brian Eno invited Radiohead to contribute to The Help Album, a War Child charity project with a strict one-day recording deadline set for 4 September 1995. Nigel Godrich, who had previously assisted John Leckie on The Bends and produced several B-sides, engineered the session.

Reader's Guide

To understand "Lucky," one must recognize its dual origins: a tour soundcheck experiment in Japan and a forced-rush charity recording. The song is structurally significant as the first track recorded with Nigel Godrich who would go on to produce OK Computer, marking a shift in their production style. Fans should note that while it was intended as a major single from OK Computer, its physical release was restricted to France due to "circumstances beyond the band's control." The song's journey from a five-hour session on 4 September 1995 to a defining track on one of rock's most acclaimed albums illustrates how quickly creative ideas can solidify into permanent works. Listening to it reveals the "nascent sound" Yorke described, bridging the gap between The Bends and OK Computer.
