Quiz & Dragons: Capcom Quiz Game
A fantasy quiz game blending board games and RPG elements.
Quiz & Dragons: Capcom Quiz Game is a 1992 arcade party title that Capcom both developed and published. It blends fantasy role-playing elements—like a medieval setting and a roster of distinct characters—with board game-style movement, giving the quiz genre an unusual twist. Unlike most Capcom releases, the game came out in Japan several years after its North American debut. It also marks the first project Hideaki Itsuno worked on at Capcom; he stayed with the company until 2024 and later contributed to the *Devil May Cry* series.
The story takes place in the land of Capconia, long peaceful thanks to the Knowledge Tree, whose seeds grant infinite wisdom to their holder. The evil Gordian steals the Wisdom Seed, plants his own Knowledge Tree, and gives seeds to local dragons. Anyone who fails to answer the dragons’ questions gets eaten. The king dispatches four brave warriors, each armed with knowledge, to stop Gordian.
Gameplay follows a board game structure: a predetermined dice roll moves the player up to six spaces, though forks in the road let them choose a path. After landing, they face a series of timed questions. Points vary based on speed of correct answers; a correct answer lights a gem above the enemy’s picture. Wrong answers cost a life point, and losing all life points forces a continue within the time limit or the game ends.
Two special spaces exist. An inn space triggers a single question from an innkeeper; a correct answer restores one to four health points. An elf space, if answered correctly, grants a special skill for the next round. Possible awards include: Medicine (restores one health), Sword (next quiz has only two answer choices instead of four), Staff (three answer choices), Scroll (player picks the next quiz’s category), Ring of Speed (slower timer), Ring of Knowledge (correct answer flashes), and Shortcut (teleports player to the final square of the current level). Hidden treasure chests on some squares can give any of these awards, plus a 5000-point bonus or full health restoration. Larger spaces on the board hold one of Gordian’s dragon followers; players cannot skip these battles and must answer questions to proceed.
Four characters are available. Kalcor, a 28-year-old swordsman called Fighter, recovers health faster than others. Roajin, a 318-year-old mystic called Wizard, can sometimes choose the question category.

Lore & Background
The game is set in the land of Capconia, which has long prospered thanks to the Knowledge Tree, whose seeds grant infinite knowledge. The evil Gordian steals the Wisdom Seed, plants his own tree, and gives seeds to dragons, who devour anyone unable to answer their questions. The king sends four warriors—Kalcor the Fighter, Roajin the Wizard, Lagnel the Amazon, and Shin the Ninja—to stop Gordian. Each character has a unique special ability: Kalcor recovers health faster, Roajin can sometimes choose question categories, Lagnel may face fewer answer choices, and Shin can deal double damage, reducing the number of questions needed.
Reader's Guide
Quiz & Dragons: Capcom Quiz Game is notable as the first project of Hideaki Itsuno, who later became a key figure in the Devil May Cry series. The game's blend of board game movement, timed quiz rounds, and fantasy RPG character abilities was unusual for the quiz genre. Its release pattern—debuting in North America before Japan—was atypical for Capcom. The game saw ports on PlayStation Portable via Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed and on PlayStation 2 and Xbox via Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2, the latter including an alternative version with questions about Capcom games. In Japan, Game Machine listed it as the seventh most-successful table arcade unit in November 1994. The game's legacy lies in its experimental fusion of genres and its place as a stepping stone for Itsuno's career.
