Overview

Following the success of the band's UK No. 1 single, Pye Records quickly issued an album drawn from their stage repertoire. The material largely consisted of rock and roll and rhythm and blues covers of American artists, including Ben E. King, Barrett Strong, The Crystals, The Everly Brothers, and The Isley Brothers. An exception was the modern folk-style song "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" The band recorded all eleven tracks in a single day, aside from the previously recorded "Sweets for My Sweet."

Release

Meet The Searchers was released as a monaural LP on the Pye label in the UK during summer 1963. It entered the LP charts on 10 August 1963, reached No. 2, and charted for 44 weeks. Two EPs containing songs from the album were also released: "Ain't Gonna Kiss Ya" reached the top spot on 5 October 1963, and "Sweets for My Sweet" went to No. 5.

US version (Meet The Searchers / Needles And Pins)

In 1964, Kapp Records obtained the rights to release Searchers music in the US. The American album combined five songs each from the British albums Meet The Searchers and Sugar and Spice, plus tracks from the single "Needles and Pins" / "Saturday Night Out." It was issued in both mono and stereo formats, entered the Billboard Top 200 on 11 April 1964, reached No. 22, and remained for 21 weeks.
