Amazing Tater
A Game Boy puzzle game starring a potato.
Amazing Tater is a Game Boy puzzle game created and published by Atlus. It first came out in Japan on August 2, 1991, and is the follow-up to the 1989 title Kwirk (known in Japan as Pazuru Bōi). However, the version released in English makes no mention of this link. The U.S. launch followed in February 1992.
In each level, players control a potato and must reach the exit by navigating obstacles. Pushing crates fills in holes, allowing the potato to cross. Different crate and hole shapes create puzzles, and players also need to operate rotating devices to advance. The game offers four modes: a practice mode, a normal puzzle mode, a mode for beginners, and an action mode with two storylines—Mega Picnic and Puzzle Forest.
Reviews at the time were mostly positive, with praise for the game’s charming style and balanced difficulty. Paul Rand of Go! magazine noted its addictive quality and highlighted the two-player option as a fresh challenge after completing the single-player game. Play Time called it a great choice for puzzle fans. While graphics were often criticized, German publication Power Play singled out the music as a standout feature.
