Development
Bruce Straley left Naughty Dog after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016) and took a break from game development, wanting to experiment with his creations. Unsure about continuing, he was followed by an idea and began prototyping with friends. They founded Wildflower Interactive on March 11, 2021, announced in July 2022, operating fully remotely with 16 employees as of 2025. Straley cited a desire to deconstruct the traditional hero's journey and improve upon the companion system from The Last of Us (2013). The familiar mimics and reacts to the player's actions, learning to perform actions along the way.
