Ernst Heinrich Weber spent his entire academic career at the University of Leipzig, where he conducted foundational research on sensory perception, particularly touch, and formulated the just-noticeable difference (jnd) and Weber's law. Born into an academic family in Wittenberg in 1795, his father was a theology professor at the University of Wittenberg. Weber was influenced early by physicist Ernst Chladni, known as the father of acoustics. After secondary school in Meissen, he studied medicine at the University of Wittenberg and earned his MD from the University of Halle in 1815. He completed his Habilitation at Leipzig in 1817 and became an assistant in a medical clinic. He was appointed professor of comparative anatomy in 1818 and chair of human anatomy in 1821. His first direct contribution to psychology came in 1834 with a work describing the sensation of touch. He held the chair of physiology and anatomy from 1840 to 1866, then returned to anatomy until 1871. Weber described the just-noticeable difference as the perception of a ratio between stimuli, not an absolute difference. For weight, the finest discrimination required an 8–10% difference. He suspected a constant fraction applied to all senses, but varied for each. This principle, later termed Weber’s law by Gustav Fechner, established that sensory events relate mathematically to physical stimulus changes. Weber also conducted research on hydrodynamics with his brother Wilhelm, explaining blood vessel elasticity and continuous blood flow. He developed the two-point threshold technique using a compass to map touch acuity, and explored the terminal threshold of sensation. In later life, he worked with his brother Eduard on nerve stimulation and muscle suppression. Weber retired in 1871 and died in Leipzig in 1878.
