Blood Cultures

Anonymous collective blending psychedelic pop with electronic and tropical textures.

Blood Cultures is an American experimental indie pop group from New Jersey that began as a solo project and later expanded into a quartet. The band members remain anonymous, obscuring their faces with black hoods in all photographs to keep the focus on the music itself. Their genre-blending sound, often described as psychedelic pop, electropop, and chillwave, has drawn critical attention. As they have explained, their anonymity is crucial to their ethos and aims "to keep the relationship between the listener and the music as pure as possible".

History

Blood Cultures uploaded their debut single, "Indian Summer", to Soundcloud in October 2013 with minimal background information and no social media presence, represented only by a photograph of a hooded figure. Two further singles, "Mercury Child" and "Meavy Hetal", followed in February and April 2014. In September 2015, the single "Scenes from a Midnight Movie" appeared, using artwork that later served as the cover for the debut album Happy Birthday, released in July 2017.

That same year, the group gave some of their first interviews and performed live for the first time at Rough Trade in August, later sharing bills with Princess Nokia and Yumi Zouma. On Halloween 2018, Blood Cultures issued the single and video "Dunk on Me", the first material from their second album. The single "Flowers for All Occasions" arrived in March 2019, inspired by the hijacking of local New Jersey TV stations in the early 1990s. In June 2019, the single "Best for You" was released alongside a manifesto reaffirming the band's commitment to anonymity, arguing that "disclosing our personalities, politics, alignments, intentions, orientations, etc., could detach the listener further from the personal connection that they have made with the music" and urging that "art is not what the artist intends it to be but rather what you make of it".

The album Oh Uncertainty! A Universe Despairs followed in September 2019, preceded by the single "No Favors" in August. The band described the album as "a conversation between two opposing sides that share a single relationship" and "a personal journey of self-discovery". It received generally positive reviews, with one critic calling it "one of 2019's greatest experiences".

In November 2019, a video for the track "Broadcasting" commented on the question of identity for those who feel pulled between two cultures. Blood Cultures promoted the album with their first US headline tour in late 2019.
