Founded in 1902 as Be Quick by the Hollander brothers, the club changed its name to Go Ahead in 1905 at the request of the Dutch Football Association. The suffix 'Eagles' was added on 1 July 1971, following a suggestion from head coach Barry Hughes, as the professional department separated from the parent club. The eagle is the charge in the coat of arms of Deventer. The club's biggest win was 11–1 against Roda JC on 7 October 1962. They were the only side to defeat Ajax in any competition during the 1971–72 season, winning 3–2 at De Adelaarshorst.

In Their Own Story

The rain slicked the Philips Stadion turf on a grey Tuesday evening in 1982. The crowd hummed with anticipation, knowing Deventer arrived without fear. In the stands, a young fan clutched his scarf tight as the referee blew the whistle. For ninety minutes, it was not the polished skill of Eindhoven that ruled, but the relentless pressing from the visitors. When the final whistle sounded in a draw, there was no celebration, only the heavy realization that this opponent would not be underestimated again.
