In the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League, PSV progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Lyon on penalties. In the first leg against Milan, the Italians won 2–0. In the return leg in Eindhoven, PSV took a 2–0 lead, but Massimo Ambrosini scored a fatal away goal for Milan. A late goal by Philip Cocu was not enough, as Milan progressed on away goals.
