His career spanned over five decades as a religious broadcaster, author, and founder of multiple organizations including CBN and Regent University.[1] On March 22, 1930, in Lexington, Virginia, Marion Gordon Robertson, who later went by "Pat," was born to A. Willis Robertson and Gladys Churchill Robertson, a family with political prominence.[2][3] Robertson's 1988 bid to become the Republican presidential nominee was unsuccessful.[4]
Life and work
Robertson hosted The 700 Club, a Christian news and TV program broadcast live weekdays on Freeform.[5] He founded CBN University in 1977, later renamed Regent University, and served as its chancellor and CEO.[6][7] Robertson started the Christian Coalition after his presidential campaign, a 1.7-million-member Christian right organization.[8] He retired from hosting The 700 Club in October 2021 on the sixtieth anniversary of its first telecast.[9][5]
A law degree from Yale Law School was obtained by Robertson in 1955, but he did not pass the New York bar exam on his sole attempt.[10]
What the cited sources add
Robertson's official biography states that Operation Blessing has provided goods and services valued at over $4.2 billion.[3] The same biography notes that his book "The Secret Kingdom" reached number three on Time magazine's national non-fiction list.[3] A Regent University press release reports that Robertson is survived by four children, 14 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.[11] The Guardian obituary states that Robertson called feminism a "socialist, anti-family political movement" that encourages women to "kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians"[12]
CNN's Fast Facts notes that Robertson turned over management of CBN to his son Gordon in November 2007.[13]
