Making and release

In late February 2013, Code.org released a video featuring Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Jack Dorsey on the importance of learning to code.[4] Code.org began operations in January 2013, aiming to broaden access to computer programming for everyone.[3][2] Hadi Partovi has said the concept for Code.org occurred to him on the day Steve Jobs died in 2011, while he was reflecting on his own legacy.[2] TechCrunch noted that the organization's promotional video achieved viral status within fourteen days of its debut.[4]

At the Annual Crunchies Awards in February 2016, Code.org received the "Biggest Social Impact" award.[5]

What the cited sources add

A TechCrunch article from January 2013 reported that Code.org was building a database of every classroom that teaches programming.[3] The same article noted that Lesley Chilcott, who produced "An Inconvenient Truth," was part of the Code.org team putting together a short film.[3] A 2015 Huffington Post article stated that Hadi Partovi worked full-time for almost three years, often 70 or 80 hours a week, to help Code.org reach its impact.[6] The same article reported that Code.org's work was already impacting countries in every single country in the world.[6]

The press release also noted that CodeAI had reached more than 150 million students across 190 countries.[7] A press release from 2026 announced that CodeAI (the organization's new name) had provided over 2 billion hours of instruction and involved 3 million teachers.[7] An article by Taylor Soper on June 3, 2015, reported that Code.org had announced 11 new partnerships with organizations to expand its reach to more schools.[8]
