Rodgers began his career as a defender at Ballymena United, then signed by Reading at age 18, but a genetic knee condition forced him to retire at 20. He remained at Reading as a coach and academy director, and played non-league football for Newport IOW, Witney Town and Newbury Town. After studying coaching methods in Spain, he was invited by José Mourinho to join Chelsea as youth manager in 2004, later promoted to reserve manager in 2006. He managed Watford (2008), Reading (2009), Swansea City (2010–2012), Liverpool (2012–2015), Celtic (2016–2019), Leicester City (2019–2023), Celtic again (2023–2025), and Al Qadsiah.

Rodgers led Swansea City to promotion to the Premier League in 2011, the first Welsh team to do so, and guided them to an 11th-place finish the following season. At Liverpool, he led the team to runners-up in the 2013–14 league season. At Celtic, he achieved an undefeated domestic season in his first year and trebles in his first two seasons, then won two further Scottish league titles in his first two seasons back at the club. He won the 2021 FA Cup with Leicester City.
