At international level, Yorke represented Trinidad and Tobago on 74 occasions between 1989 and 2009, scoring 19 goals. He helped his nation reach the semi-finals of the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and later qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history, representing his country in the 2006 tournament. After retiring from playing in 2009, Yorke became assistant manager of the Trinidad and Tobago national team, a position he held until the completion of the qualifying matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As a manager, he won the Australia Cup with Macarthur FC in 2022, and qualified with Trinidad and Tobago for the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The centre-back, a man a full head taller, took one step back and felt the ground shift. Yorke's first touch was so soft it looked like a caress, and then his body was angled away, the defender's foot sliding on the wet grass. A half-turn. The ball at his instep. And then the net was already shaking, the crowd already roaring, and Yorke was jogging back toward the penalty area with his hands on his hips, as if to say: *yes, that again.*

Reader's Guide

Yorke was first discovered by Graham Taylor on a tour of the West Indies in 1989. He made his First Division debut for Aston Villa against Crystal Palace on 24 March 1990. He transferred to Manchester United for £12.6 million on 20 August 1998. In his first season, he was a key player in the treble-winning campaign, finishing as top league goalscorer with 18 goals and winning the Premier League Player of the Season. He scored his 100th Premier League goal on 24 November 2000. He moved to Blackburn Rovers in July 2002, then to Birmingham City on 31 August 2004. He signed for Sydney FC and won the Joe Marston Medal in the inaugural A-League Grand Final. He transferred to Sunderland on 31 August 2006 and was released at the end of the 2008–09 season.
