Alpha (2018 film)
Prehistoric adventure of a boy and his wolf.
Last updated
Alpha is a 2018 American prehistoric adventure film set during the last ice age.[1] The story follows a young hunter who befriends an injured wolf after being separated from his tribe.[1] Chuck, a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, performs the role of the wolf character Alpha.[1]
Life and work
The film was first announced in September 2015 under the title The Solutrean, with Albert Hughes directing for Studio 8.[2] The film grossed $98.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $51 million.[3] An anthropology professor at UBC Okanagan, Christine Schreyer, invented the constructed languages used in the dialogue, with Beama being the primary one.[4] An investigation was launched after allegations that five bison in Alberta were killed during the film's production.[5]
Alpha was released on August 17, 2018.[6]
What the cited sources add
A Deadline Hollywood article from September 2015 reported that the film was Jeff Robinov's first homegrown project from Studio 8.[2] The same article noted that the script was written by Dan Wiedenhaupt and that the film would use the IMAX 3D format.[2] An April 2018 Deadline article stated that Alpha swapped release dates with White Boy Rick on Sony's schedule.[6] That article also described Alpha as an Ice Age adventure about an elite warrior injured and left for dead by his tribe.[6]
A box office report from August 2018 noted that Alpha's opening weekend was not strong enough to justify a sequel titled Beta.[7] The same report quoted a rival marketing executive saying the film "is definitely not for kids".[7] Variety critic Owen Gleiberman described Alpha as "like a Disney adventure fueled by a higher octane of visual dazzle".[7]
