Lore & Background
The plot follows the revelation of Maria's kidnapping and the identity of the person responsible for the crimes of the bankrupt biotech company Progênese. Julia Zaccarias transforms into Juli Di Trevi after receiving a rejuvenating serum. Men and women are turned into vampires, cats, snakes, spiders, and werewolves that attack São Paulo, spreading evil like an epidemic. The terrified population pursues the mutants. Maria and Marcelo meet the League of Good in the Mayer family mansion, which becomes the refuge for healthy mutants. Samira, Maria's twin sister trapped in Dr. Júlia's laboratory for 20 years, is reported dead. Samira is the most powerful and evil mutant, able to absorb the powers of others, and serves as the main antagonist, often rivaling or subordinating Dr. Juli Di Trevi, who aims to exterminate all who thwart her.
DEPECOM (Department of Research and Control of Mutants) is restructured with two wings: one seeks to imprison violent mutants and preserve peaceful ones, while the other, led by Fredo and Adolfo, wants to exterminate all mutants. Valente discovers that Julia is an alien from the Omega File, but loses his memory after being attacked. Nati, a vampire with a conscience, helps him. Janete's powers evolve, allowing her to see that humanity's survival depends on protecting the children of Lúcio and Bianca. Juli attacks the babies and their mothers. In the island's tunnels, Maria and others are captured by Ant Men and brought to Agartha, where the Ant Queen says they are in Agartha at the center of the Earth. The mutant vampire Dracula forms the Vampire League, a branch of the League of Evil.
Reader's Guide
Os Mutantes: Caminhos do Coração is significant as a Brazilian telenovela that blends science fiction, horror, and fantasy elements, featuring mutants, vampires, werewolves, and reptilian aliens. It expands on the storyline of its predecessor, introducing the League of Good and the Evil League, and explores themes of good versus evil, identity, and survival. The show's cast includes Bianca Rinaldi, Leonardo Vieira, Babi Xavier, and many others. Its legacy lies in its ambitious narrative scope, incorporating underground civilizations like Agartha and Shangri-La, and addressing moral dilemmas through DEPECOM's divided approach to mutant control. The telenovela also features a notable soundtrack with artists such as 14 Bis, Milton Nascimento, and Os Mutantes. It remains a distinctive entry in Brazilian television for its serialized, genre-heavy storytelling.
