The Portland Trail Blazers made their first playoff appearance in the 1976–77 season, winning 49 games as the third seed in the Western Conference. They defeated the Chicago Bulls in three games in the first round, then beat the Denver Nuggets in six games in the second round, and swept the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in four games in the Western Conference finals to reach the NBA Finals for the first time.
