History
Decapitated was founded in Krosno, Poland in 1996 by guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka, then 15, his brother drummer Witold "Vitek" Kiełtyka, then 12, and vocalist Wojciech "Sauron" Wąsowicz, then 16. Bassist Marcin "Martin" Rygiel, 13, joined a year later. The band released its first demo, Cemeterial Gardens, in 1997 and its second, The Eye of Horus, in 1998. After signing to Earache Records subsidiary Wicked World, Decapitated issued its debut album Winds of Creation in April 2000, which included a cover of Slayer's "Mandatory Suicide" and was produced by Piotr Wiwczarek of Vader. The band toured with Vader in the United Kingdom in early 2001. Their self-produced second album Nihility, released in February 2002, included a cover of Napalm Death's "Suffer the Children". Decapitated performed at the Polish Ozzfest event in late May and toured North America and Europe in August. The Negation, produced by Sławek and Wojtek Wiesławscy, came out in February 2004 to positive reviews, followed by tours in Europe and the United States. In mid-2005, Sauron left the band, citing personal plans and health complications. Adrian "Covan" Kowanek, formerly of Atrophia Red Sun, replaced him. The band recorded Organic Hallucinosis at Hertz Studios in Białystok in August, releasing it in February 2006. Allmusic noted the album's musical change was likely to polarize longtime fans.
Musical style and critical reception
Decapitated's music is written by Vogg, who co-worked with Vitek before the latter's death. The band became known for its songwriting and technical instrumental approach at an extraordinarily young age, earning an international fan base in the underground music community. Allmusic said of the debut that the band showed a seemingly effortless command of their instruments and solid songwriting. The albums Nihility and The Negation are characterized by powerful blastbeat-filled drumming, dissonant yet memorable guitar riffs, inventive guitar solos, and high production quality. Metal Hammer stated that Sauron was one of the most capable vocalists on the scene. A notable groove element is present in their death metal sound, often described as technical death metal; Vogg cited Dimebag Darrell of Pantera as an inspiration for groovy riffs. The band's later output has been described as groove metal. Their releases are considered some of death metal's most significant of the early 21st century. Winds of Creation was credited with re-igniting a stagnating death metal scene, and Organic Hallucinosis proved substantially influential. Kerrang! stated that Decapitated have released classic albums that turned them into one of the genre's most widely respected bands. Tomas Haake of Meshuggah called Vitek a true talent and drummer genius. Alternative Press described Decapitated as one of death metal's elite bands.
