Gameplay
In this game, players take on quests from a guild office, choosing from five options at a time. These tasks involve fighting monsters, gathering materials like ore or plants, or making items. Finishing a quest gives money and Fame points. Money is used to improve weapons and gear, while Fame advances the story and lets players recruit more characters, including crossover figures from earlier Tales games. Unlike the main series, players create their own main character, customizing both looks and stats. They can keep adjusting these as they collect new equipment. A crafting system lets them combine items to make new ones. After beating the game once, two harder difficulty levels, Hard and Very Hard, become available alongside the default Normal. Players can start over with all their levels, money, and items except quest items, and change difficulty anytime outside dungeons. Characters gain Artes by leveling up, which can be chained from basic to master to arcane. Mastering these unlocks a class’s Mystic Artes, dealing heavy damage. Random monsters drop Magic Maps, which open Ex versions of dungeons with rare items and tougher enemies. Some quests trigger a Radiant Quest, rewarding very powerful class-specific gear. The two starter classes are Warrior, strong in melee and able to use axes and swords, and Thief, focused on quick attacks and stealing.
Story
The world of Terresia is under assault by a devourer that consumes its mana. This is caused by two entities, Widdershin and Aurora, descenders of other worlds. The World Tree uses its last power to create a Descender, the player's character. The hero awakens to a creature named Mormo, whose own world was destroyed by the same threat. After hearing a scream, the player rescues a girl named Kanonno, a member of the organization Ad Libitum, which fights injustice. The player and Mormo join Ad Libitum to learn the devourer's location. Tales characters from main installments appear as NPCs assisting the player. Original characters include Kanonno, an amnesiac later revealed as a descender from Pasca; Mormo, a descender from Yaoon; Ganser, the oppressive ruler of Ailily who worked with Widdershin; Aurora, a foreign Descender working with Widdershin; and Widdershin, the descender of Gilgulim and main antagonist, who plans to devour all worlds.
Development
Of all the Tales of the World spin-off games, only Radiant Mythology ever saw an English release. Its Japanese subtitle is An RPG For Your Sake. Kana Uemura performed both the theme song Kamihikōki and the opening Hikari to Kage. The US version of the opening has no lyrics because of licensing problems.
Reception
The game received average reviews according to Metacritic. Famitsu gave it a score of 30 out of 40. GameSpot described it as the video game equivalent of fan fiction, with familiar characters in a formulaic story. IGN noted colorful graphics, a decent soundtrack, 300 missions, and countless hours of gameplay.
