Gameplay
Players take charge of a professional, semi-professional, amateur, or international football team, handling player contracts, club finances, and team talks. The simulation judges the player on various factors determined by the club's AI owners and board. Over 100 new and revised features were introduced, including a new default GUI designed with user feedback for improved usability. The scouting engine was revamped to allow scouts to learn from experience and provide a scout report card. Media interaction was expanded, enabling comments on any player rather than only other managers. The youth team system was completely overhauled, replacing the older regen system that recycled retired players' statistics. Pre-match team talks were added, and half-time talks gained the ability to target individual opposition players for special attention. A hints and tips screen appears during saving or loading. Players can ask their own team's players for recommendations on staff or players to bring to the club. Board interactions were improved, including the possibility of new stadium construction and club takeovers by investors who may fire the manager. Managers and NPCs can comment on referees' decisions, which are not always correct. The PlayStation Portable version introduced wireless multiplayer and was titled Football Manager Handheld.
Release
On September 30, 2006, four demo versions of the game appeared: Strawberry and Vanilla for Windows and Mac. The basic Vanilla demo offers only the English league and language, without kits, player images, sounds, or graphics. The Strawberry version includes playable leagues from eleven countries, many kits and player photos, and support for multiple languages. The full game launched in Europe on October 18, 2006, followed by Australia on November 2 and North America on November 6.
Reception
Football Manager 2007 was widely praised by critics, earning an 87 average on Metacritic. GameSpot called it a truly immersive football experience, and PC Gamer claimed no other game matches it. It received a Golden Joystick nomination and won the BAFTA Gamers Award. The PC version sold at least 300,000 copies in the UK, earning a Platinum award from ELSPA.
