Gameplay
Shredders is a sports video game centered on snowboarding, viewed from a third-person perspective in an open world. The player can perform tricks such as grinding, and can hang onto a snowmobile or a winch. A rewind feature allows reversing time after a poor landing or missed trick. Different snow surfaces affect gameplay, with freshly fallen snow being more slippery. The single-player campaign includes missions set in mountainous environments, such as racing an opponent or executing a specific trick, culminating in a cross-race. Completing missions and bonus objectives unlocks cosmetics from licensed brands including Burton Snowboards, DC Shoes, K2 Sports, The North Face, Vans, and Volcom. Missions can be replayed for higher scores and faster times. The game offers replays and a photo mode. Online connectivity lets players see others snowboarding without interaction, and private sessions can be hosted for friends only. Real-life snowboarders such as Arthur Longo, Jamie Anderson, Zeb Powell, Sebbe De Buck, and Marcus Kleveland appear as playable characters, though their faces are obscured by ski masks and goggles. The soundtrack was composed by Ghent-based producer Hector Devriendt, known as Jennifur, and later released as the album Nowhere, Now Here.
Development
Shredders was developed and self-published by Foampunch, a studio formed through a collaboration between I-Illusions and Let It Roll. Narrative director Chris Hanney stated the team aimed to build a snowboarding experience allowing players to define their own style, drawing inspiration from snowboarding films, the Amped games from the original Xbox, and snowboarding heroes on Instagram. The game was announced during Microsoft and Bethesda's E3 2021 showcase, originally scheduled for December 2021 but delayed to March 17, 2022. It launched as a timed exclusive for Windows and Xbox Series X/S, and was ported to PlayStation 5 on December 6, 2022. A physical special edition titled Full Ride Edition, featuring downloadable content, was released exclusively for PlayStation 5 in November 2025.
Reception
Critics gave Shredders a mixed reception, according to Metacritic. NME scored it 3/5, liking the controls and soundtrack but finding the writing weak and missing an in-game trick list. Pure Xbox awarded seven out of ten stars, enjoying the gameplay, open world, and missions, though the story, voice acting, and noticeable pop-in drew criticism. Rock Paper Shotgun described the game as a love letter to snowboarding, highlighting its mission variety and atmosphere. Windows Central praised the graphics and progression but pointed out frequent performance issues on Xbox Series X, including frame rate drops, which later appeared on PlayStation 5 as well. Jeuxvideo.com called the physics engine solid and the animations modern, applauding the easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay, though it found the graphical user interface confusing and impractical. Reviewers compared Shredders to 1080° Snowboarding, Amped, SSX, Steep, and Riders Republic, with several noting its emphasis on realistic gameplay rather than arcade-style handling.
