Overview

Roblox is built around user-generated content and games, which any user can create through Roblox Studio and share with other players. The games span various genres, including role-playing and prison escape, and the platform is designed to appeal to a family-friendly audience, often described as a massively multiplayer online game. While free-to-play, Roblox uses a virtual currency called Robux, purchasable with real money, to buy virtual items for avatars or access paid games. Avatar items are mainly user-generated, though Roblox themselves created most items for much of the platform's history. Through the Developer Exchange program, creators can convert earned Robux into real-world currency. A monthly subscription called Roblox Plus provides additional features, discounts on Robux and in-game purchases, and the ability to upload user-created content to the market. The platform's virtual economy centers on Robux, enabling users to buy, sell, and create items. Since 2019, select users can publish avatar accessories, animations, and bundles. Some items have a limited status, with prices based on supply and demand, functioning similarly to non-fungible tokens; these can be resold by players, and trading limiteds is restricted to Roblox Plus subscribers and official items.

History and development

Roblox was created in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, who previously worked at Knowledge Revolution, an educational and physics simulation software company. After that company was acquired by MSC Software, Baszucki invested in early social media sites and conceived a physics sandbox with creation tools and social networking. Development began shortly after, with the platform initially called DynaBlocks. The co-founders decided early to rely entirely on user-generated content, providing only the tools and server hosting. They worked alone on early versions, creating their own games before the creation tools were finished; these versions were basic, with unanimated avatars and simplified features. After advertising on websites, a few dozen playtesters joined. In mid-2006, the first two employees, Matt Dusek and John Shedletsky, were hired to work on communication features. Roblox was released on September 1, 2006, with Roblox Studio available the same year. Early community games included paintball, haunted houses, and model trains. In 2008, Roblox Corporation stopped making its own demonstration games, becoming fully reliant on user-created content. In 2007, the Builders Club membership subscription was introduced, with tiers including Turbo and Outrageous Builders Club, allowing more games, virtual clothing sales, ad removal, and daily Robux. Early on, the platform had two currencies: Robux and Tickets.

Community and culture

As of February 2025, Roblox reported over 85.3 million daily active users, with half of all American children under 16 in its monthly player base. Beyond games, the platform hosts social hangout places and has been used for political activism, such as supporting the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter, and for activities paused by COVID-19 lockdowns, like religious processions. The original death sound effect, often called the 'oof' sound, became a popular internet meme; it was originally from the game Messiah (2000) and was replaced in 2022 after a copyright dispute, but was reinstated in July 2025 after rights were obtained. A hyperpop music scene called 'Robloxcore' emerged in late 2020. In January 2017, Jazwares began producing licensed toy minifigures with codes for virtual items and blind boxes. In April 2021, Hasbro released Roblox-themed Nerf blasters and a Monopoly version. Roblox hosts events like BloxCon, virtual Easter egg hunts, Halloween events, Giftsplosions, and the Bloxy Awards (rebranded as the Roblox Innovation Awards in 2022); the 2020 Bloxy Awards drew 600,000 viewers. The Roblox Developers Conference is an annual three-day invite-only event in San Francisco, with similar events in London.

Reception

Critical reception of Roblox has been generally positive. Common Sense Media rated it 4 out of 5 stars, praising the variety of games and creativity encouragement while noting variable game quality and recommending disabling chat for young players. Patricia E. Vance of the Family Online Safety Institute advised parental monitoring but praised the platform for allowing kids to play, explore, socialize, create, and learn in a self-directed way, especially highlighting Roblox Studio for encouraging game development. Trusted Reviews also praised Roblox Studio for its appeal to those seeking to develop computer science skills. Roblox has faced criticism for sexual or politically extremist content on the platform, including virtual sex clubs (called 'condo' games) and far-right material like Nazi roleplay or recreations of real-world massacres. Its chat and game filtration system has been negatively received. To combat this, Roblox employs over 1,600 people to remove such material and offers privacy settings and parental controls; a 2020 Fast Company investigation found sexual content prevalent and compared removal efforts to whack-a-mole. Numerous reports of sexual predation on child players have emerged, with a 2024 Bloomberg Businessweek report attributing this to insufficient moderation overly reliant on AI and user anonymity. Since January 2025, U.S. police have arrested at least six people alleged to have used Roblox to find and sexually exploit children.
