Gameplay
Bloons TD 6 is a tower defense game viewed from a birdseye perspective, using 3D computer graphics instead of the 2D perspective of earlier Bloons Tower Defense games. It can be played solo or cooperatively with up to four players. Players place monkeys, structures, and traps—collectively called towers—to prevent balloon-like Bloons from reaching an exit. A new tower category, heroes, levels up over time or with in-game money. Towers pop Bloons or provide support such as slowing, knockback, or boosting other towers. Each tower can be upgraded up to five times; upgrades are unlocked by earning tower-specific XP per round, separate from Hero XP. Monkey Money, earned or bought via microtransactions, purchases heroes, one-time powers, and continues after losing a round.
History
Bloons TD 6 was announced on PRLog on March 28, 2017, with an initial target release of 2017, but an extensive balance and test period was required due to the game's scale and strategic depth. It is the first Bloons TD game without a Flash counterpart. A version for Apple Arcade, Bloons TD 6+, released on February 11, 2022. The Epic Games Store version arrived in December 2022. A Netflix version for iOS and Android launched on June 21, 2023. Console ports followed: Xbox One on September 5, 2023, PlayStation 4 on July 31, 2024, and Nintendo Switch on June 18, 2026. Reception
Bloons TD 6 received mostly positive reviews from critics. Stephen Knightly of the New Zealand Game Developers Association praised the gameplay depth, noting its visual appeal for a general audience and complexity for experienced players. The game was praised for extended gameplay variety but criticized for lack of replayability. As a paid app with in-app purchases that can unlock features faster, some critics argued it feels like a freemium model. Harry Slater from Pocket Gamer described the core gameplay as too reliant on older series mechanics, lacking impact for long-term players. Dennis Zirkler from GameStar believed there is sufficient content for various playstyles while maintaining core diversity, and considered in-app purchases optional with little impact on enjoyment; he criticized the need for repeated play to unlock features but praised the CHIMPS mode, which restricts most unlockable and paid features, forcing focus on optimal tower combinations. Nathan Snow from The Spectrum noted the game sticks to a proven concept despite becoming repetitive. The cartoonish visuals were praised for appealing to a wide audience through a combination of playability and complexity. Critics noted the characterization of towers and the long-term success of predecessor games as factors in Bloons TD 6's success. PCGamesN described the complexity as giving a whole new plane of addiction through integrating monkey characters with gameplay, while other critics stated such features may feel too childish or make the game appear too generic or dependent on microtransactions.
